Certification Classes

The candidate’s information MUST be used to register for all Red Cross classes to ensure that they will be registered correctly in the Red Cross portal. Instructions for accessing online course material will be sent to the email on file within about two (2) business days.

Red Cross Class Refund Policy: Candidates are eligible for a full refund if requested no less than five (5) business days prior to the start of the class. All other refund requests will be at 75% of the class cost. If a candidate is unable to complete the course requirements and is dismissed, they may request to move to a future class or receive a 75% refund. All requests for a refund or class transfer must be sent in writing to the Aquatics Coordinator, Andria Moyer (amoyer@shepherd.edu) within five (5) business days after the conclusion of the original course.

Lifeguarding

This course provides students with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies and provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over. Upon successful completion, the participant receives certifications in Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer with First Aid that is valid for two years.

Prerequisites

  • Must be 15 year of age on or before the last day of the course
    • Must provide proof of age at first in-person session
  • Complete all online modules prior to the first in-person session
    • Must provide proof of completion
  • Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence
    • Swim 150-yards (6 lengths of the pool) continuously using breaststroke or freestyle, demonstrating rhythmic breathing (face must be in the water unless taking a breath)
    • Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2-minutes by treading water, legs only
    • Swim 50-yards (2 lengths of the pool) continuously using breaststroke or freestyle, demonstrating rhythmic breathing (face must be in the water unless taking a breath)
  • Retrieve 10lb brick from 7-10-ft, surface and swim 20-yrd with weight, using legs only, and exit the pool (without using a ladder) within 100 seconds

If a candidate is not successful on the first attempt at the prerequisite skills, they only have one more opportunity to meet the prerequisites.

Lifeguarding Review/Re-certification

This course provides participants with the opportunity to review the course knowledge and skills within a formal course setting in order to maintain their American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification. To enroll in the Lifeguarding Recertification course, you must have a current certification or a certification expired by no more than 30 days for American Red Cross Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid. The course includes 6-hours of online training and 10-hours of in-person instruction with both hands-on and written tests. Participants are required to demonstrate prerequisite swim skills listed under Lifeguarding.

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer with First Aid

This certification is for the healthcare worker seeking the skills needed for responding to cardiac and first aid emergencies. Upon successful completion of the course the participant will receive a certification valid for two (2) years.

Course Includes

  • 3-hours of online training (to be completed prior to the start of class)
  • 5-hours of in-person training
  • CPR/AED training for adults, children, & infants
  • Rescue breathing, choking, and treating sudden illnesses
  • First aid skills for muscle, soft tissue, bone & joint injuries
  • Handling environmental emergencies

Lifeguard Instructor

This course trains current lifeguards the skills to instruct American Red Cross Lifeguarding, Lifeguarding Blended Learning, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, Aquatics Attraction Lifeguarding, Waterpark Skills, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Bloodborne Pathogens Training. Upon successful completion of the course, the participant will receive a certification valid for two (2) years.

Prerequisites

  • Must be at least 17 years of age on or before the last day of class
  • Possess current Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certificate or equivalent certificate from another organization
  • Complete the online session prior to the first night of class (about 2-hr)

Lifeguard Instructor/Instructor Trainer Review

This course serves to practice and polish skills and to redirect as needed in order to ensure consistency with the current Red Cross Lifeguarding program. Each candidate must demonstrate as a primary rescuer as well as an assisting rescuer at least once for the multiple-rescuer response scenarios. To be successful, participants should be able to perform skills to the standard by the completion of the session.

Prerequisites

  • Possess a current certification as a Lifeguard Instructor/Instructor Trainer
  • Must be at least 17 years of age on or before the last day of class

Water Safety Instructor

This course is designed to prepare instructor candidates to plan, prepare, and teach the American Red Cross Learn-To-Swim and Water Safety programs including Parent and Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, Learn-To-Swim, Adult Swim, Private Lessons, Water Safety Courses and Presentations.

Course Includes

  • 7-hours online session
  • 24-hours on-site training
  • Practice teach opportunities
  • Learn swimming progression, lesson planning, and class management strategies
  • Techniques for communicating with participants of all ages and skill levels as well as with their families
  • Improve swim technique

Prerequisites

  • Must be 16 years old by the last day of class
  • Pre-course swim requirements:
      • Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating/sculling)
      • Tread water for 1 minute
      • Pass the following Level 4 performance criteria:
        • Front crawl 25 yards
        • Back crawl 25 yards
        • Breaststroke 25 yards
        • Elementary backstroke 25 yards
        • Sidestroke 25 yards
        • Butterfly 25 yards
